How to choose a workbench, in the order that matters

Height first, always, because it is the only spec that is about you rather than about the bench. Everything else is downstream of it.

In order: your bench height (elbow height, adjusted for the task), top thickness (1.4 to 1.5 in of solid wood is the practical floor), depth (24 in is the sweet spot; 30 in and you cannot reach the back), and whether drawers belong in the same purchase (only if space forces it).

1. Work out your height before you look at benches

Published guidance is elbow height for general work, two to four inches above elbow height for precision assembly, and considerably below it for heavy work where you want body weight over the tool. Elbow height is roughly 62.5 percent of standing height, which for someone 5 ft 10 in puts the elbow near 43 inches.

The elbow coefficient is an average across adults, not a measurement of you. If you can, stand straight, bend your arm to 90 degrees and measure floor to elbow — then apply the same offsets. The ranges these produce sit inside the published 34 to 38 in guidance for general work, which is the point: the guidance is a range because people are. How we work these out.

If you can, measure rather than estimate: stand straight, bend your arm to 90 degrees, measure floor to elbow. The coefficient above is an average across adults and your arm is the better input. Then check that number against the bench's published height, and add the casters if it has them.

2. Top thickness, then top material

Thickness resists flex; material determines behavior. A general garage bench wants 1.4 to 1.5 inches of solid wood as a floor, and more is stiffer. Where the listing does not state a thickness, assume it is thin - makers who spent money on a thick top say so.

3. Depth, which people always get wrong upward

Deeper sounds better and stops being better quite quickly. At 24 inches you can reach the back of the bench comfortably. At 30 you cannot, and the back six inches become a shelf for things you have stopped noticing. Unless you are assembling something genuinely large, 24 inches is the number.

Length is a different question and more is generally better: a 72-inch bench gives you a work zone and a set-down zone at the same time, which a 48-inch one does not.

4. Drawers only if the space forces it

Bench drawers publish lower ratings than cabinet drawers - typically 100 lb per pair against 120 to 150 - because the frame is carrying a work surface as well. If you have room for a bench and a separate rolling cabinet, that combination is better on both counts.

5. Two things to check that are not specs

  • Vise mounting. If you want a vise, the top has to overhang the frame enough to get a backing plate behind it. Many benches do not, and finding out afterwards is expensive.
  • Assembly and delivery. A 72-inch bench is heavy and awkward, and most arrive flat-packed. Plan on two people and a couple of hours.
