Milwaukee sells two different 46-inch lines and the listings barely distinguish them. One is 18 gauge and rated to 2,500 lb. The other is 20 gauge and rated to 1,800. Here is how to tell.

Milwaukee sells two separate 46-inch lines. The High Capacity cabinet (48-22-8542) publishes 18 gauge, 2,500 lb, 19,440 cu in, 22 in deep. The standard cabinet (48-22-8520) publishes 1,800 lb, 15,160 cu in, 18 in deep and 20 gauge on its retail listing. Same brand, same width, materially different boxes.
Why this page exists
Search for a Milwaukee 46-inch tool chest and you get results from two product families that share a width, a color and most of a name. Listings call both of them a 46 in. roller cabinet. The specification sheets are where they separate, and the gap is not marginal.

What 18 gauge against 20 actually buys
18 gauge is 0.0478 in and 20 gauge is 0.0359 in, so the High Capacity body is about 33 percent thicker steel. That is a much larger difference than two adjacent-sounding numbers suggest, and it is the reason gauge is worth chasing at all. The full conversion table.
What it buys is resistance to racking - the box staying square while loaded to most of a ton and pushed across a garage floor with an expansion joint in it. What it does not buy is drawer capacity. Both lines publish the same 100 lb soft-close slides, so a single drawer holds the same either way. The extra capacity in the High Capacity line lives in the frame, not the slides.
The depth difference is the one you will feel
Milwaukee makes an unusually direct claim about the High Capacity cabinet: it is 22 inches deep, which the company describes as four inches deeper than most units. Against the standard cabinet's 18 inches, that is the difference between a half-inch breaker bar lying flat in a drawer and sitting diagonally across two tools' worth of space.
If your tools are hand tools, 18 inches is fine and the shallower footprint gives you back walking room in a single-car bay. If they are automotive - breaker bars, long torque wrenches, big pry bars - the four inches is the whole argument. How depth is measured, and what the figure excludes.
The drawer rating both lines share
100 lb per pair, soft close, on every drawer of both cabinets and the matching top chest. Apply the published 70-80 percent design guidance and that is an 80 lb working drawer, which is one 200-piece socket set at about 24 lb plus a half-inch impact set at about 18 and still comfortable, but not a drawer to fill with impact sockets and a torque wrench together.
That is the honest limitation of Milwaukee's 46-inch storage against the wider competition: several 56-inch cabinets publish 120 or 150 lb per pair. Both lines publish soft-close slides, and on a 100 lb drawer that is more than a comfort feature. How to make sure you get the right one

The standard 8-drawer cabinet is a good box being mistaken for a better one. 1,800 lb, angle iron frame, 5-inch casters and liners included is a genuinely sound specification - it is simply not the 18-gauge Milwaukee its reputation is borrowed from.
