Why automotive is a different problem

- Drawer rating first, and derated. Automotive tools are dense. Published guidance is 70-80 percent of the per-pair rating, so a 120 lb drawer is 96 lb, and a socket set plus an impact set is already 42 of those.
- Depth, because the tools are long. A half-inch breaker bar or a long torque wrench either lies flat or wastes a drawer sitting diagonally. 24 in beats 22 in for this work.

A 16-inch-deep chest for automotive tools
It is the single most common mismatch in this category. Sixteen inches will not take a half-inch breaker bar or a long torque wrench lying flat, so they sit diagonally and consume two tools' worth of drawer. Shallow chests are excellent for hand tools and wrong for this work.
75 lb drawers, whatever the width
Apply the published 70-80 percent design guidance and a 75 lb pair is a 60 lb drawer. A 200-piece socket set is about 24 lb and a half-inch impact set about 18. Two sets and a ratchet and you are at the limit of a drawer you will open every day.
Four small casters under a loaded box
A loaded 56 in cabinet passes 900 lb. On four casters that is about 225 lb a wheel against 150 on six, and small wheels stop dead at an expansion joint. This is the spec you notice every single day and nobody checks before buying.
Where the weight goes
Loading a mechanic's box is not the same as loading a hobby box, because the heavy things are not occasional here - they are what you use. The rule is unchanged and it matters more: heaviest in the lowest drawers.
There is engineering behind it rather than tidiness. The better cabinets run dual slides on the deep bottom drawers precisely because that is where the maker expected the impact sockets to go - one published 56 in set uses double 120 lb glides down there.
