The published width is the cabinet only. Add caster overhang, add a side handle, then add room to stand beside an open drawer, and the real footprint is bigger than the tape measure suggested.

A 56-inch cabinet needs about five feet of clear wall and enough room to stand beside it with a drawer fully out. The 56-inch figure is the cabinet body - it excludes caster overhang and any side handle, and one published combo set measures 60 in wide once assembled on its casters.

What 56 inches actually gets you

Width buys drawer length, which is a specific and useful thing. A 56-inch cabinet has drawers close to 48 inches of usable interior, which is where a full set of long-handled wrenches, a 24-inch pry bar and a torque wrench can all lie flat rather than diagonally. That is the real argument for the size, and it is a good one.

What it does not automatically buy you is capacity. A 56-inch cabinet with 75 lb drawers holds less useful weight than a 46-inch one with 150 lb drawers, whatever the photographs suggest. Width and capacity are independent specs and the listing wants you to conflate them.

A 56-inch box in a bay you have not measured

This is the size where people get it wrong. The width on the listing excludes casters and handles, and you also need standing room beside an open drawer. Measure five feet of clear wall before anything else. If you do not have it, the 46-inch page is not a downgrade, it is the right section.

A 56-inch combo set delivered to a house with steps

604 lb in one carton is a genuinely difficult delivery. Curbside is the default for freight items this size, and moving it up a step without a ramp and two people is how boxes get dented and backs get hurt. Plan the delivery before you order it.

The weight problem at this size

A published 56-inch combo set can be 604 lb empty. Load eighteen drawers and you are somewhere north of 900 lb on six casters, which is 150 lb a wheel. That is inside what a 5 x 2 in industrial caster is built for, but it is not nothing - and on four casters instead of six it would be 225 lb a wheel.

Depth, at this width, is the differentiator

Almost every 56-inch cabinet is either 22 or 24-25 inches deep, and that is the choice worth thinking about. Twenty-two inches is the mainstream and fits most bays comfortably. Twenty-four and a bit gives you room for the tools that overhang, at the cost of floor space and reach to the back of the drawer.

One published example runs 56 in W x 24-5/8 in D x 41-1/8 in H. Another is 56 in W x 22 in D. That two-and-a-half-inch difference is the whole argument between them, and neither listing frames it that way.
