A 46-inch cabinet is the largest box that fits a single-car bay with the car in it, and it is the size where 18-gauge steel is genuinely available - Milwaukee publishes 18 gauge (0.0478 in) across its High Capacity line, thicker than the 19 or 20 gauge most 56-inch cabinets use.

Why this size deserves better press than it gets

Buying guides treat 46 inches as the step below the real thing, and that is a photograph problem rather than an engineering one. Wider looks better in a listing image. What actually happens in a garage is that a 56-inch cabinet plus caster overhang leaves you sidling past it, and a 46-inch one does not.

The spec sheets back this up. The thickest published body gauge in the mainstream consumer market - 18 gauge - appears on 46-inch cabinets and chests. Get your capacity back vertically

The way to make a 46-inch footprint hold as much as a 56-inch one is to stack. A matching top chest adds eight shallow drawers directly above the cabinet without taking another inch of floor, and shallow drawers are exactly what most people are short of - screwdrivers, pliers, measuring tools, everything that gets lost in a deep drawer.

The 52-inch middle ground

Craftsman's S2000 chests are 51.5 inches wide and only 16 inches deep, which is a genuinely different proposition: nearly the width of a 56 with a footprint shallower than anything else here. In a garage where depth is the constraint - a bay where a 22-inch box would stop the car door opening - that shallow depth is the whole point.

The cost is that 16 inches will not take a long tool lying flat. If your drawers are hand tools and fasteners, that does not matter. If they are breaker bars, it matters a great deal.
