How to choose a tool chest: five numbers, in order
Not a checklist of features. Five published figures, in the order they should knock options out, with the arithmetic for each one shown in full.

In order: the wall you have (measure it first, it eliminates half the market), the drawer slide rating (per pair, then take 80 percent), the body gauge (18 or 19 on a cabinet), the published volume in cubic inches divided by 1,728, and the empty weight so you can check the caster load. Everything else is preference.
1. Measure the wall before you look at a single box
This is not the fun step and it is the one that saves the most money. Measure the clear wall, then subtract for anything that projects into it. Then stand where the box will go and imagine opening a drawer fully while standing beside it, because that is how you will use it every day.
Rough guide: a 46-inch cabinet wants about four feet of wall plus standing room; a 56-inch wants about five. The published width excludes caster overhang and side handles, and one published 56-inch set measures 60 inches assembled. The full measuring conventions.
2. Take the drawer rating and multiply by 0.8
Drawer slide ratings are published per pair, at full extension, and the published design guidance is to run at 70 to 80 percent of the rating. So the useful number is not the one on the listing. A 120 lb pair is a 96 lb drawer; a 75 lb pair is a 60 lb drawer.

Ratings are published PER PAIR of slides at full extension. The working column applies the published 80 percent design figure, which is the generous end of the 70-80 percent guidance.
Then weigh what you actually own, or estimate it: a 200-piece mechanic's socket set runs about 24 lb, a half-inch impact socket set about 18, a 22-piece combination wrench set about 11. Two of those in one drawer and a 75 lb slide is already at its working limit. The calculator does this for you.
3. Check the gauge, and know what it buys
Gauge is the body steel thickness, expressed as an index that counts backwards. 18 gauge is 0.0478 in; 19 is 0.0418; 20 is 0.0359. What thicker steel buys you is resistance to racking - the box staying square when loaded and rolled - not drawer capacity, which is entirely the slides.
For a consumer cabinet, 18 or 19 gauge is the target and 20 is the budget default. Where a listing does not mention gauge at all, that is information: in a competitive market, makers with a good number tend to print it. The full conversion table.
4. Convert the volume, do not count the drawers
Drawer count is the least useful spec on any tool storage listing. Eighteen shallow drawers and eleven deep ones can hold the same tools, and the eleven will hold them better because fewer, deeper drawers waste less space on drawer sides and slide hardware.
Published volume in cubic inches is comparable across layouts. Divide by 1,728 for cubic feet: 42,876 cu in is 24.8 cu ft; 15,877 is 9.2. Those are numbers you can picture and compare. A drawer count is not.
5. Look up the empty weight, then do the caster math
This is the check nobody does. A published 56-inch combo set is 604 lb empty. Loaded, it is well north of 900 lb, and on six casters that is about 150 lb a wheel. On four it would be 225. Both are within what a decent industrial caster is built for, but the difference is what you feel when you try to move it.

The two decisions the numbers will not make for you
Combo set or cabinet alone. If you are buying one thing, buy the cabinet - deep drawers on rated slides are the part you cannot improvise. If you know you want both, the combo is usually cheaper than buying separately. Chest vs cabinet.

Does tool box steel gauge really matter?
For resistance to racking under load, yes. 18 gauge is 33 percent thicker steel than 20 gauge, which is a much bigger difference than the two-number gap suggests. It does not affect drawer capacity - that is entirely the slides. The gauge table.
Is it better to have more drawers or bigger drawers?
Bigger, generally. Fewer deep drawers waste less internal space on drawer sides and slide hardware than many shallow ones, and shallow-drawer storage is better solved by adding a top chest later. Compare published cubic inches rather than drawer counts.
