Every cart here publishes a total capacity. One publishes what a single shelf holds, one publishes its steel, and one publishes how deep its trays are. Those three numbers decide a cart, and here is who prints them.

For a steel cart, the Sunex 8005SC - the only one here that publishes its steel, at 16 gauge, with 350 lb capacity and two locking casters. For a plastic cart, the WEN 73009 - the only one that publishes a per-shelf rating (250 lb each), on the largest casters here at 5 in. A cart is not a small tool box
A tool box stores tools. A cart carries them to the work and holds them there while you use them - beside the wheel you have off, under the bench you are assembling on, next to the machine you are servicing. That difference changes which numbers matter.
On a tool chest the governing figures are body gauge and drawer slide rating, because the question is what the box will hold for a decade. On a cart the questions are what one shelf will carry, whether things stay on it while it moves, and whether it rolls over the floor you actually have. - Total capacity, and whether it is split by shelf. A cart is never loaded evenly - the heavy part goes on one shelf. A published per-shelf figure matches how a cart is used; a total divided by the shelf count is a guess.
- Tray lip depth. The job of a cart is to move loose things. A shallow lip is how a socket ends up under the car when a caster hits a crack.
- Caster diameter, and how many swivel or brake. Bigger wheels roll over cords and slab joints. Four swivels turn in place; two fixed casters steer like a shopping cart. Brakes matter on a sloped garage floor.
- Steel or plastic. Steel takes magnetic trays and dents. Polypropylene never rusts and never holds a magnet. Neither is better; they suit different work.
- Is a gauge published? Steel carts almost never say how thick their steel is. The one that does has told you something the others chose not to.
What we did not do

Read across the rows and each cart wins on exactly one disclosure. That is not a coincidence of this shortlist - it is how the category works. Makers publish the number they are proudest of, and nobody publishes all of them.
The per-shelf problem
Three of these four carts publish a total and stop. A total capacity is quoted for load evenly distributed across every shelf, and nobody loads a cart that way. The transmission you just pulled goes on the bottom shelf. The drill, the impact and their batteries go on the top one.
Dividing the total by the shelf count gives you a number that looks like a per-shelf rating and is not one. Whether a single shelf can carry half the cart's total depends on how that shelf is built and supported, and that is exactly the figure three of these four makers do not publish.
What we did with the totals
We quote each total as the maker publishes it and we do not divide it into a per-shelf number, because that would be inventing a specification. WEN publishes 250 lb per shelf on the 73009, so that figure appears. The other three show 'Not published', which is the honest answer.
16 gauge, converted
Sunex's 16-gauge figure is worth dwelling on, because it is thicker steel than any tool chest body on this site. Gauge numbers run backwards - lower is thicker - and the steps are uneven.

Thicknesses are the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge for sheet steel. The comparison column is computed against 20 gauge, the most common budget tool-box body.
At 0.0598 in, 16 gauge is about two-thirds thicker than the 20-gauge body that most budget tool chests use. That thickness is spent in the right place: a cart shelf is a small panel that takes point loads and gets dropped on, which is harder service than a drawer bottom. It is also why the Sunex's 350 lb rating is the most interesting number on the page - the heaviest published steel carries the lowest steel-cart rating, which tells you the rating is set by something other than shelf thickness. Casters decide whether the cart gets used
A cart that does not roll where you need it becomes a shelf. The two figures that matter are diameter and configuration.
- Diameter. A 5 in caster rolls over a slab joint or an extension lead that stops a 4 in caster. The WEN 73009 is the only cart here on 5 in wheels.
- Swivel versus fixed. Four swivel casters turn the cart in its own footprint, which is what you want between a car and a wall. Two fixed casters track straight and resist turning - better over distance, worse in a single-car bay.
- Brakes. Many garage floors slope toward the door for drainage. A cart without brakes drifts on a slope, and a loaded one drifts into the car. The WEN 73163 publishes two foot brakes; the Sunex publishes two locking casters.
- Tread. Non-marring casters protect a coated floor. Hard polypropylene casters are louder and can mark epoxy.

For automotive work, magnets tip it toward steel: a magnetic tray on a steel cart solves the rolling-socket problem without a lip at all. Before you order
- Measure the gap you will park it in - beside the car, under the bench, between the machines. A 36 in cart does not fit a 30 in gap.
- Check the top shelf height against your working height. A cart you stoop to is a cart you stop using. Bench height from your own body applies here too.
- Look at your floor. Cracks and cords mean 5 in casters. A slope means brakes.
- Decide whether you need magnets. If yes, steel is the only answer.
- Put the heaviest thing you will carry on one shelf, and ask whether the cart publishes a figure that covers it.

Any cart whose listings disagree about its capacity
It is common in this category for the same model number to carry one capacity on one listing and double it on another. When that happens there is no published figure, only two claims. We left those carts out rather than choose between the numbers.
A cart with 3 in casters for a garage slab
Small hard casters stop dead at expansion joints, cords and a dropped washer, and the cart's momentum carries the load forward off the tray. On concrete, 4 in is the working minimum and 5 in is noticeably better.
A drawer cart, if what you needed was a cart
A cart with a bank of locking drawers is a small rolling cabinet. It is useful, it is several times the price of an open-tray cart, and it no longer does the job of carrying loose parts to the work. If you want drawers, rolling tool boxes is the page.
Flat-edged shelves for automotive work
A shelf with no lip is a table. Anything round - sockets, bolts, a drain plug - will find the edge on the first bump. Look for a published lip depth or visible barrier walls.
