One maker here publishes a pull figure. Retailers reprint that same bar with a number twenty-four times smaller. Neither is lying, and the difference is worth understanding before you hang a wrench on it.

Buy the Master Magnetics 24 in. bar if you want a magnet, because it is the only one here that publishes a pull figure. Buy the Ernst 6014M wrench rails if the actual problem is wrenches in a heap - a toothed rail sorts them by size, which no magnet does. Read the unit on any rating you are quoted.
The rating that means two different things
Master Magnetics publishes its 24 in. tool bar as holding up to 20 lb per inch. Several large retailers list the same part as a 20 lb pull. Over a 24 in bar those are not similar claims - one is twenty-four times the other.
How we handled the discrepancy
We quote the maker's wording, because the maker made it, and we say plainly that retailers reprint it differently. What we do NOT do is average them, pick the flattering one, or present either as a tested result - we have not hung anything on this bar. The honest position is that the published figure is per inch, under ideal flat contact, and that your wrench is not ideal flat contact.
This matters beyond one product. A pull rating is measured with a flat steel plate pressed against the full magnet face, which is the best case and nothing like a tool. A combination wrench touches the bar along a narrow strip. A socket touches it on a curve. A painted tool has a layer of paint between the steel and the magnet, and magnetic force falls off sharply with distance.

How we picked
- Is a pull rating published, and with what unit? 'Holds up to 20 lb per inch' and '20 lb pull' are two different claims about the same bar, and only one maker here publishes anything at all.
- Is it a magnet, or an organizer that happens to be magnetic? A bar holds steel by friction against its face. A toothed rail holds wrenches in slots and uses a magnet only to stick the rail to the box. These solve different problems.
- How is it mounted? Screws through welded tabs stay put. Adhesive lets go in a hot garage, and it lets go all at once.

Mounting, which is where these actually fail

Adhesive-mounted strips are common, cheap and a bad idea on a garage wall. Foam tape under constant shear load creeps, creeps faster with heat, and fails suddenly rather than gradually. A strip that has held for eight months is not a strip that has proved itself; it is a strip eight months into a process.
The magnetic-base organizers are a third case: they are not mounted at all, they are stuck to a steel surface and rely on friction to resist sideways load. Inside a tool chest drawer that is usually enough, until the drawer is shut hard. On a cabinet door it is fine.
What a magnet does to the tools
- Everything left on it becomes slightly magnetized. Screwdriver tips: helpful. Feeler gauges, dial indicators and anything you care about the calibration of: keep them off.
- Magnets collect swarf continuously. A bar above a bench accumulates a fur of steel dust and needs wiping, or it transfers to your hands and then to the work.
- Paint reduces holding force sharply, because magnetic force falls off fast with distance. A powder-coated tool holds far worse than a bare one.
- Non-ferrous tools do not stick at all. Aluminum, brass and most quality torque wrench bodies are simply not candidates.
- Heat weakens ferrite magnets. Not usually a garage problem, but do not mount one above a welder.

Foam tape creeps under sustained shear load and creeps faster when the garage is hot. The failure is not gradual - the strip stays put for months and then arrives on the floor with everything on it. Screw-mounted, through tabs, or not at all.
Magnetic holders inside a drawer
