Gauge, converted into something usable
Pegboard is the one place on this site where a steel gauge shows up outside a tool chest, and the conversion works the same way. Lower gauge is thicker steel, and the gap between the two metal pegboard systems here is bigger than it sounds.

Triton's 18 gauge is 0.0478 in. Wall Control's 20 gauge is 0.0359 in. That is about a third more steel in the Triton panel, and on a pegboard the thing gauge protects against is hole deformation - the slow ovalling of a hole around a hook that is carrying more than it should, which ends with the hook tilting and the tool coming off.
Both are enormously better than hardboard, which does not publish a gauge because it does not have one. The full gauge reference has the conversions and the caution about reading a gauge as a proxy for quality.

- Steel gauge, converted. Lower gauge is thicker steel. 18 ga is 0.0478 in and 20 ga is 0.0359 in - about a third more metal - and gauge is what governs whether a hole deforms under a loaded hook.
- Is a load limit published at all? For the panel, and separately for the hooks. Hardboard pegboard publishes neither. Metal pegboard sometimes publishes both, and that is the reason to buy it.
- Square holes or round. Square-hole systems take locking hooks that do not lift out when you pull a tool. Round-hole boards take the cheap universal hooks you probably already own. You cannot have both.
- Does it mount without framing? A boxed panel stands itself off the wall. A flat board needs furring strips, which is an afternoon you did not plan for.
- What the hooks cost. A bare board hangs nothing. Price the board and the hooks together or the comparison is meaningless.
What we did not do

We have listed it where it comes from rather than promoting it to a manufacturer spec.
A 10 lb hook next to a 120 lb drawer
Pegboard and a tool chest are not competing for the same tools. A mid-range chest publishes 120 lb per drawer pair; a two-slot pegboard hook publishes 10-15 lb. This is the decision that locks you in, and it is worth making deliberately.

The honest summary: Triton if the wall has to carry weight and you are starting from nothing, Wall Control if you already own hooks or if you want every limit published by the person who made the board.
Hanging the wall properly
- Find the studs and use them. It doubles the published panel rating and costs nothing but a stud finder.
- Leave the standoff. Hooks need clearance behind the board to seat. Boxed panels build it in; flat panels need furring strips.
- Hang the heavy things low and near a stud. The panel rating assumes distributed load, not a breaker bar at one corner.
- Do not put fasteners in pegboard bins. Two pounds is the published limit and a bin of bolts passes it.
- Accept the dust. Everything on an open wall collects it, and in a damp garage that means surface rust - which is a solvable problem.

A list with no losers is a list nobody edited. These are the choices we would actively steer you away from, and why.
Hardboard pegboard, for anything with weight
It publishes no gauge, no panel rating and no hook rating, and the holes blow out progressively around a loaded hook until the tool falls off. It is fine for a craft room and it is the wrong material for a garage wall carrying steel hand tools.
Square-hole boards, if you own a drawer of round hooks
Standard 1/4 in round pegboard hooks do not lock into square holes and largely do not fit. Switching systems means rebuying every hook, which on a full wall is a real cost that rarely appears in the comparison.
Plastic bins on pegboard, loaded with fasteners
Wall Control publishes 2 lb per plastic bin. A bin of machine screws passes that quickly, and the failure is the bin letting go of the wall rather than the bin breaking. Fasteners belong in a parts cabinet.
Mounting to drywall without finding studs
Wall Control's own published figure is up to 100 lb per panel into drywall with the supplied anchors against up to 200 lb into studs. That is a doubling, for free, in exchange for finding the studs first.
The honest verdict
Metal over hardboard is not a close call, and the reason is disclosure as much as strength: steel pegboard publishes a gauge and a limit, and hardboard publishes an invitation to find out. Between the two metal systems, Triton has the thicker steel and Wall Control has the better-documented system and takes the hooks you already own.
Either way, price the hooks with the board. A bare panel is a wall decoration until the hooks arrive.
