The best job boxes, and why they use thicker steel than your tool chest
A job box spends the night on an open site, and it is built like it. Four of these five publish 16-gauge steel, thicker than any shop tool chest on this site. Only one publishes how much it holds.
For the most lockable volume, the Knaack 4830 - the only box here that publishes a capacity (25.25 cu ft), in 16-gauge arc-welded steel with a 7-gauge lock housing. For a 48-inch box at considerably less money, the Northern Tool 2048-NTE, also 16 gauge with 1/4 in solid lock tangs. For a box you can lift by hand, the DeWalt 32 in. at a published 77 lb. Budget for padlocks: three of the five ship without them.
A job box is not a tool chest
A tool chest lives in a locked garage and gets judged on drawers: slide ratings, drawer depth, how many you get. A job box lives on an open construction site, often outdoors, and the building around it is gone. It has no drawers, a lid on top, skids for a forklift, and one job above all the others: still being there, with everything in it, the next morning.
That changes which published numbers matter. Steel gauge moves from a durability question to a security question. The lock hardware, which nobody asks about on a garage chest, becomes the spec that matters most. And weight stops being a delivery detail and decides how the box can be moved at all. How we picked
- Published steel gauge. Lower gauge is thicker steel. A job box is left on an open site overnight, so the shell is doing the job a locked garage does for a tool chest. A maker that publishes the gauge has made that checkable.
- Published volume, or at least interior dimensions. Exterior dimensions overstate what fits, because walls, lid and skids take their share. A capacity in cubic feet, or interior dimensions you can multiply, is the real figure.
- Lock hardware, as published figures. Lock housing gauge, lock tang thickness and the number of locking points are all published by someone here. 'Heavy-duty lock' is not a figure.
- Weight, against how you will move it. A box you load by hand and a box you load by forklift are different purchases. Published weight decides which one you are buying.
- What is not in the box. Three of these five ship without padlocks. The price on the listing is not the price of a locked box.
What we did not do
Everyone in this category says they spent seventy-five hours testing tool chests. We have not opened any of these boxes, and we say so. The pattern is the reverse of shop tool chests. There, a published gauge is the exception. Here, four of five publish one, and every one of those four says 16. What goes missing in this category is volume: one box states it.
16 gauge, and what it is thicker than
The shop tool chests on this site publish bodies from 18 to 21 gauge. Job boxes jump straight to 16, and because gauge numbers run backwards and in uneven steps, that is a bigger difference than two numbers suggests.

Thicknesses are the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge for sheet steel. The comparison column is computed against 20 gauge, the most common budget tool-box body.
At 0.0598 in, 16 gauge is about two-thirds thicker than the 20-gauge body common on budget tool chests. On a box left unattended overnight, that extra steel is the point. The full gauge reference has the arithmetic, including the caution that gauge tells you about the steel and nothing about the welds or the lock.
Which is why the Knaack's 'fully arc-welded seams' and the Northern Tool's 'fully arc welded' are worth reading alongside the gauge: two makers here publish how the panels are joined, and the other three do not.
Volume: one publishes it, one lets you work it out
Knaack publishes 25.25 cubic feet for the 4830. That is a stated capacity, and it is the only one on this page.
JOBOX does not publish a capacity, but it does publish interior dimensions: 46 x 23 x 27.2 in. Those multiply out to about 28,778 cubic inches, which is about 16.7 cubic feet. That is our arithmetic from JOBOX's published figures, not a JOBOX number, and it ignores the lid storage and the sidewall bin.
Do not multiply exterior dimensions
The other three boxes publish exterior dimensions only. Multiplying those gives a number that looks like a capacity and overstates it, because walls, lid depth and feet all come out of the outside measurement. Compare the JOBOX's exterior (48 x 24 x 30.75 in) with its interior (46 x 23 x 27.2 in) to see how much disappears. How boxes are measured covers this in detail.
Locks: the least consistent disclosure in the category
Every box here is sold on security. What each maker actually publishes about the lock is completely different, and the differences are useful.
- Knaack publishes a 7-gauge reinforced lock housing and a 3-point latch, and the KL version includes a padlock.
- JOBOX publishes three locking points and a reflective indicator that shows locked or unlocked from a distance - a daily-use feature for a site where several people use the box.
- Northern Tool publishes 1/4 in solid lock tangs, the figure that governs pry-bar resistance, and states that locks are not included.
- Craftsman and DeWalt each publish two recessed lock enclosures, so the padlock does not hang exposed, and both state that padlocks are not included.

Same factory, different badge
The listing for the Craftsman 45 in. box names Montezuma Storage as its manufacturer. The DeWalt 32 in. box is sold through Montezuma's own store and listed on Amazon under Montezuma. So two of the five badges on this page come through the same company - both publish 16 gauge, recessed lock enclosures, a lip seal and a 3-year warranty.
That is not a knock on either box. It is a reminder that in tool storage the badge on the lid often tells you less than the published figures under it. Tool box brands goes through who makes what, and which names you can actually buy.
Before you order
- Check the delivery method. A box at these weights may arrive by freight. Know who is lifting it and how.
- Measure where it will live. The trailer, the truck bed or the corner of the site, including room to open the lid fully.
- Price in padlocks if the listing says they are not included.
- Decide how it moves. Forklift skids, a two-person lift, or casters - Knaack and Northern Tool both publish that casters can be added.
- Think about power. If tools need charging while locked, only the Knaack publishes a pass-through for a cord.

A truck-bed crossover box, if you wanted a job box
Crossover and saddle boxes bolt across a pickup bed and are sold to fit specific trucks. They are a different product with different fitment questions, and this page does not cover them. A job box sits on the ground or in a trailer and moves by hand, dolly or forklift.
A job box as garage storage
A lid-top steel chest makes you dig from above, and anything at the bottom is effectively lost. If the tools never leave the building, a rolling cabinet with drawers is the better answer for the same money - the tool chest roundup is where to look.
Budgeting for the box and not the locks
Northern Tool, Craftsman and DeWalt all publish that locks or padlocks are not included. A job box with no padlock is a steel crate. Add the cost of two good padlocks before comparing prices.
A box heavier than your way of moving it
The published weights here run from about 77 lb to 148 lb, and Knaack ships its 4830 at 194 lb. If you have no forklift, no trailer ramp and no second person, the heavy end of that range is a box you will not move again after delivery.
The honest verdict
Buy the Knaack 4830 if you want the most lockable volume and the most complete disclosure, and can move 194 lb of steel. Buy the Northern Tool box if you want the same 48-inch footprint and the same 16-gauge steel for considerably less, and will fit your own locks. Buy the DeWalt 32 in. if the box goes in and out of a truck by hand. Buy the Craftsman if dust and rain are the problem and a 3-year warranty matters. And buy the JOBOX if a crew needs to see at a glance that the box is locked.
