Depth is doing all the work
Six and a half inches does not sound like much until you multiply it out. Take the same 41-inch width and the same 37.5-inch height, add 6.5 inches of depth, and the interior grows by roughly the 3,000 cubic inches that separates these two cabinets. Kobalt is not building a denser box; it is building a deeper one.
That has two consequences and they point in opposite directions.
- 24.5 inches takes long tools lying flat. A half-inch breaker bar, a 24-inch torque wrench, a long pry bar - all of these fit across a deep drawer. At 18 inches they sit diagonally, eating two tools' worth of space, or they live somewhere else entirely.
- 18 inches fits where 24.5 does not. In a single-car bay, six and a half inches is the difference between opening the car door and not. That is not a compromise, it is the reason the shallow cabinet exists.
So the honest way to decide is to measure the bay before comparing the boxes. How tool boxes are measured covers what a published depth includes and, more importantly, what it leaves out - handles and caster overhang are frequently not in the number.

The total load rating is a different number: it describes the whole cabinet, casters included, not any single drawer. Kobalt's extra 500 lb is real headroom, and for most home garages it is headroom neither box will ever use. Ten drawers at 80 lb of working load each is 800 lb of tools, and that is a serious collection. The drawer arithmetic works through what a full box actually weighs.
