Of the five products here, exactly one publishes a load-bearing specification - Homak's RS Pro hutch, at 16 gauge with 100 lb slides and 28,702 cubic inches. It also costs more than a complete chest and cabinet.
The add-on category has the worst disclosure on this site
That is a strong claim and the table below is the evidence for it. Tool chests themselves are patchy - roughly a third publish no gauge. Job boxes are good; four of five publish 16 gauge. Garage shelving is the best-documented category here, with every unit publishing a per-shelf figure.
Accessories that bolt to a tool box are the worst. The products below are made by established industrial names - Kennedy, Homak, Westward is Grainger's own line - and between four of them there is not a single published load rating, gauge or weight.

The shelf is the one that should worry you
A drawer cabinet that publishes no rating is an inconvenience - you can be conservative and it sits on the floor regardless. A shelf cantilevered off the side panel of a tool box is different: the load is trying to peel it away from a thin steel side, and the failure is sudden. It is the product in this category that most needs a published figure and the one least likely to have one. Load it with light things.
Four formats, four different problems
Side cabinets: more drawers, sideways
A narrow drawer bank that bolts to the end of a rolling cabinet, typically 13 to 16 inches wide and matched to the cabinet's working height. The Westward gets seven drawers into 15.5 inches and the Kennedy five into 13.5. Both are shallow drawers by definition - this is small-tool and fastener storage, not where a breaker bar goes.
The catch is money. Either of these costs about what a complete budget rolling cabinet costs, so the question is not "cabinet or no cabinet" but "side cabinet or second box". A second box gives you more storage for the same spend; a side cabinet gives you one continuous working unit and does not need its own floor. If floor space is the constraint, the side cabinet wins. Otherwise it usually does not.
Full-height lockers: the only one that stands things up
The Homak H2Pro is a tall enclosed locker rather than a drawer bank, and it solves the one problem no drawer can: long items that need to be vertical. Brooms, pry bars, long clamps, a shop vac hose. If those currently lean against a wall, this is the format that fixes it. Its documentation is thin - a width and very little else - which is disappointing from a maker that specifies its RS Pro line properly.
Hutches: the second level
A hutch sits on top of a top chest and uses the dead wall space above the box. Homak's RS Pro is the one genuinely documented example we could find on the open market: 16 gauge body, frame and drawers, removable ball-bearing slides rated 100 lb per pair, 28,702 cubic inches of published capacity, an HMC tubular lock, a four-outlet power strip with two USB ports, and a limited lifetime warranty.
For context, 28,702 cubic inches is 16.6 cubic feet - about twice what a Craftsman S2000 52-inch chest holds, sitting above the box rather than taking another inch of floor. That is a genuinely good product. It is also priced above most complete chest-and-cabinet sets, and it weighs 254 lb, which has to be lifted to chest height by two people.
Check the variant before you order a hutch
Amazon sells the RS Pro range through multi-variant listings where a hutch, a top chest, and a hutch-plus-chest combination can share a listing family and differ by several hundred dollars. Homak's own site sorts them by model number - the hutch alone is 02072010. Read the selected variant, not the listing title, and match it to a model number before checking out.
Hanging shelves: a surface, not storage
The cheapest thing here by an order of magnitude, and the most misleadingly named - "side cabinet shelf" is a shelf. It gives you 16 by 12 inches of surface hanging off the side of the box, which genuinely helps when every flat surface is already covered. It publishes no load rating, it contains nothing, it locks nothing, and it is in the way when you walk past.

How we picked
- Does it publish a load figure of any kind? A hanging shelf needs a load rating more urgently than a drawer does, because the failure mode is the whole thing coming off the side of the box. This is the first filter and almost everything fails it.
- Is it a cabinet, a locker or a shelf? Three formats are sold under the same search term and they solve different problems - more drawers, upright storage, or somewhere to put the thing in your hand.
- Are the external dimensions published? You are bolting this to an object you already own. Width, depth and height are the minimum needed to know whether it fits the space beside it.
- Does it state what it mounts to? "Universal" is a marketing word, not a mounting specification. Where compatibility is unstated we say so.
- What does it cost against a whole second box? The honest comparison for most of this category, and one that several of these products lose.

Any hanging side shelf that publishes no load rating
Which, in this category, is all of them. A shelf cantilevered off the side panel of a tool box is the one accessory where the load figure genuinely matters, and not one listing we found states one. Treat them as somewhere to rest a part and a coffee, not as storage, and do not load them up.
"Universal" mounting, taken at face value

Before you buy any of them
- Check your box has mounting points at all. Industrial cabinets have bolt patterns in the end panels. Most consumer chests do not, and nothing on this page publishes a compatibility list.
- Measure the working height. A side cabinet that is two inches taller than the box it joins is a permanent annoyance, not a minor one.

- Assume a hanging shelf is rated for very little, because none of them says otherwise.
