# Stud & Stack - full reference > Tool chests, workbenches and workshop storage, compared on published specifications. Independent US publication. Funded by Amazon Associates commission. What this publication is, and is not Stud & Stack compares tool storage on four published numbers - body steel gauge, drawer slide rating per pair, storage volume in cubic inches, and empty weight - and on the arithmetic that turns those numbers into something comparable. It is NOT a testing publication. We have not tested, opened, loaded or owned any product covered here. There is no lab, no test rig, and no credentialed reviewer. Every page that recommends a product states this. There is no numeric score for any product anywhere on the site, and no Review or AggregateRating structured data is emitted, because a score would assert an evaluation that was not performed. The author is Scooter M., framed as an enthusiast rather than by tenure or credentials. No certification is held or implied. ## 2. Methodology Two rules govern every figure: 1. Every specification is cited to the manufacturer page or retail listing it came from. A spec without a citation would be a remembered spec, and a remembered spec is a fabricated one. 2. Every derived number is computed at render time from a cited published input. There is no field in the content model for a derived number, so a derived figure cannot be typed in wrong and cannot disagree with the same figure on another page. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the page renders "Not published" rather than an estimate. Roughly a third of the 56-inch cabinets on Amazon publish no body gauge at all, and that absence is treated as information. Where the method is weak, stated plainly: published specifications describe a product as designed. They do not describe build consistency, finish quality, how a drawer feels after two years, or a bad weld. Those are what hands-on testing is good at, and this site does not have them. ## 3. The three conversions, in full ### Steel gauge to thickness From the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge for sheet steel, anchored on 41.82 lb per square foot per inch of thickness. Gauge counts DOWN as thickness goes up, and the steps are uneven. - 14 ga = 0.0747 in (1.90 mm) - 16 ga = 0.0598 in (1.52 mm) - 17 ga = 0.0538 in (1.37 mm) - 18 ga = 0.0478 in (1.21 mm) - the thickest gauge mainstream brands publish - 19 ga = 0.0418 in (1.06 mm) - common on 56 in combo sets - 20 ga = 0.0359 in (0.91 mm) - the default budget cabinet body - 21 ga = 0.0329 in (0.84 mm) - 22 ga = 0.0299 in (0.76 mm) 18 gauge is about 33 percent thicker steel than 20 gauge. What thicker steel buys is resistance to racking under load - not drawer capacity, which is entirely the slides. ### Drawer slide rating to working load Ratings are published PER PAIR of slides at full extension. Published design guidance is to operate at no more than 70-80 percent of the rating, because of impact loads on closing, uneven weight distribution, and fatigue over thousands of cycles. This site applies 80 percent, the generous end, and says so. - 75 lb rated = 60 lb working - 100 lb rated = 80 lb working (typical of chests and bench drawers) - 120 lb rated = 96 lb working (typical of mid-tier 56 in combo sets) - 150 lb rated = 120 lb working (the best figure published on consumer cabinets) - 250 lb rated = 200 lb working (industrial storage) Reference tool weights used in the drawer calculator (published product weights, rounded): 200-piece mechanic's socket set 24 lb; 1/2 in impact socket set 18 lb; hammers and pry bars 14 lb; 22-piece combination wrench set 11 lb; pliers and cutters 9 lb; cordless drill plus two batteries 8 lb; 1/2 in torque wrench 6 lb; 20-piece screwdriver set 6 lb. ### Standing height to workbench height Published ergonomic guidance: a general work surface sits at about elbow height, precision assembly 2-4 in above elbow height, and heavy work (planing, hammering) well below it. Elbow height is estimated at 62.5 percent of standing height. That coefficient is the ONLY estimated constant on this site and is labeled as an estimate everywhere it appears. Published general-bench guidance is a 34-38 in range, and it is a range because the rule is relative to the body. ## 4. Retail and affiliate reality in this category This is the most commercially important fact about tool storage and most publications avoid stating it: - U.S. General, ICON, Yukon, Bauer: Harbor Freight house brands, sold in their stores and on harborfreight.com only. No affiliate program on any network. - Kobalt: Lowe's house brand, sold there only. No affiliate program. - Snap-on, Matco, Mac Tools: dealer-truck and franchise distribution, not a retail channel at all. - Husky: The Home Depot's house brand, but genuine third-party Amazon listings exist. - Ridgid Pro Gear: The Home Depot channel; not reliably on Amazon. - Milwaukee, DeWalt, Craftsman, Montezuma, Trinity, DURATECH, Seville Classics, Klein, ToughBuilt and Amazon-native brands: available on Amazon. Frequently asked, answered - What gauge should a tool chest be? 18 or 19 for a consumer cabinet loaded heavily. 20 is the budget default. - How much weight can a drawer hold? The published per-pair rating times about 0.8. Consumer ratings run 75-150 lb per pair. - Are slide ratings per pair or per slide? Per pair, which is the same as per drawer. - Chest vs cabinet? A chest is the shallow-drawer unit that sits on something; a cabinet is the deep-drawer unit on casters. Buy the cabinet first. - How much space does a 56 in chest need? About five feet of clear wall; one published combo set is 60 in wide assembled on its casters. - Correct workbench height?
